Our Long National Nightmare Is Over.

Huckabee has finally accepted the inevitable and dropped out of the presidential race. Who would have thought that a failed southern governor with a questionable ethics history and a propensity for basing his policy decisions on a quaint religious tradition would ever come this close to becoming President? Perhaps now he'll disappear from the public eye, and take Chuck Norris with him.

It's funny, sort of, that the whole corruption thing never much got out into the national press. Most of us just saw an affable (and I reluctantly admit that his wit made up a little bit for the rest of him) southern crank. The Huckster was exactly the sort of down-home, beer-sharing, god-bothering, don't need no book-learning, snake-oil-selling bullshit artist that the Republicans have been priming their voters for since they brought the Dixiecrats into the fold. Cows coming home to roost or something.

(Though to be fair, I don't see Huck as a racist either.)

I guess I've never known Huck to be explicitly racist, and in fact, before he actually began to be taken seriously as a candidate, he was very pro-immigrant. He also was very pro-active in trying to find homes for persons displaced by Katrina. You might almost say he acted in a "Christian" fashion. Of course, he quickly sold out as soon as he thought he might be president.
